At Colegio Internacional de Granada, we love to celebrate and learn from the cultural traditions that are part of our bilingual project. For this reason, last November 11th, we experienced a very special day on the occasion of St. Martin’s Day (Día de San Martín), a holiday deeply rooted in German-speaking countries, which we bring closer to our students each year so they can continue broadening their view of other cultures.
This celebration, which keeps values like solidarity and camaraderie alive, becomes a magnificent opportunity for our students to continue learning German through experiences that combine music, community, and meaningful learning.
The central activity of the day was the dramatization of the famous encounter between St. Martin and the beggar, a symbolic scene that seeks to convey the sense of generosity characterizing this tradition. During the day, St. Martin and the beggar toured the center’s facilities and handed out sweets to the students, bringing with them the excitement and spirit of unity that accompany this celebration in German-speaking countries.
This type of experience encourages students, especially those taking their first steps in language learning, to connect culture with language in a more accessible and motivating way.
Additionally, students from 6th Grade Primary, 1st and 4th Year of ESO prepared a song accompanied by a dance and performed it for the youngest students, who thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Music thus became a bridge to connect different ages, fostering camaraderie and teamwork across grade levels.
The students’ involvement in this activity demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm with which we approach multicultural celebrations at our bilingual school in Granada. In this way, the German language is integrated into daily life naturally, promoting a more complete and experiential learning process.
At our school in Granada, we work to ensure that education transcends academic content and allows every student to also grow as a person. Celebrating St. Martin’s Day is an opportunity to remember the importance of gestures like sharing, helping those around us, and valuing the joint effort of the entire educational community.
Beyond the recreational aspect, these activities allow students to internalize values that we work on across different educational stages: respect, solidarity, empathy, and cooperation. Therefore, spaces like this are a fundamental part of our formative project.
The festive atmosphere, the participation of students of different ages, and the representation of an international tradition made this celebration a special moment within the school calendar. We are very proud of the enthusiasm with which everyone participated and their motivation to continue learning languages and discovering new cultures.
At our high school in Granada, we will continue to promote activities that enrich our students’ learning, always maintaining an open view of the world. Fostering internationalization is one of the pillars of our educational identity, and celebrations like St. Martin’s Day remind us that learning a language also means knowing the culture and stories that give it life.
We are grateful for the participation of the entire educational community in this significant day and hope to continue sharing many more experiences that enhance learning, community, and the personal growth of our students.
