An unparalleled learning opportunity. On February 24 and 25, the Colegio Internacional de Granada offered its Primary and 1st and 2nd year ESO students the opportunity to attend a very special live conference. This talk, given by Javier Hernández—a geologist and father of two of our students—allowed students to connect with the research vessel Hespérides, located in the heart of Antarctica. A unique event that brought science and the world of research closer to our school in Granada.
Exploring Antarctica through the eyes of an expert. From the ship, Javier Hernández shared his experience working in one of the most remote and fascinating places on the planet. Through this connection, students were able to learn firsthand how scientific research is carried out in Antarctica, learning about sampling, the research tools used, and the organization of teamwork in extreme conditions. For many, it was an exceptional opportunity to experience science up close through the experience of an expert who transmits his passion for research.
Applied science in a unique environment. The conference focused not only on scientific procedures but also on the peculiarities of Antarctica as a research site. Students learned about the extreme environment in which scientists work, how technology adapts to these spaces, and the relevance of research for understanding climate change and the continent’s biodiversity. At our institute in Granada, we promote interest in applied science and its direct impact on understanding the world around us.
The value of teamwork and international collaboration. During the talk, Javier explained how cooperation between different countries and disciplines is crucial for carrying out research projects in Antarctica. Students were able to reflect on the importance of teamwork, international collaboration, and the fundamental role of languages in global scientific projects. This multidisciplinary approach allowed them to see how science transcends borders and requires collective effort to advance the understanding of the great challenges facing our planet.
A space for curiosity and reflection. The most exciting part for our students was the possibility of asking questions directly to the speaker. From doubts about living conditions in Antarctica to more specific questions about climate change, students were able to interact and obtain answers from someone with field experience. This interaction allowed them not only to expand their knowledge but also to develop a greater curiosity and appreciation for science as a driver of change.
Reflecting on climate change. One of the key themes of the conference was the impact of climate change on Antarctica and its influence on rising sea levels and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This topic was especially interesting for the students, who were able to delve into the importance of science in addressing global challenges and the fundamental role that research plays in the search for solutions for the planet’s sustainability.
Significant learning for the future. Connecting live with Antarctica was not only a learning experience but also a source of inspiration for our students. Seeing how science can change the world and how researchers face such complex challenges generated great motivation among the students, who now better understand the value of scientific research in a global context.
A unique experience they will not forget. At the Colegio Internacional de Granada, we are committed to offering our students authentic experiences that connect them with the real world. This connection with Antarctica has been a perfect example of how active learning and interaction with experts enrich our students’ education, giving them a broader and more global vision of their environment.
