Science Week is one of the most prominent events for bringing scientific research closer to students, and at our Colegio Internacional de Granada we always take advantage of this opportunity for learning to move outside the classroom and come to life. Last week, 1st year Bachillerato students from the Biology, Geology, and Environmental Sciences classes visited the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Granada to participate in several workshops and training activities.

This experience allowed the students to delve into the scientific world from a practical perspective, reinforcing their knowledge and sparking new career interests. Connecting the academic curriculum with research reality is a priority at our institute in Granada, especially at stages where students are defining their academic and professional future.

Workshops to Discover How Science Works

During the day, students participated in different workshops and sessions led by specialists from the university environment. One of them focused on the importance of fertile soil. Through group work and direct observation, they were able to understand the fundamental role that soil quality plays in ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. This workshop reinforced key content from Environmental Sciences and allowed them to reflect on the impact human activity has on the planet.

Subsequently, they took part in a genetics workshop, directly related to their Biology content. There, they explored applied concepts of inheritance and genetic variability, essential aspects for understanding the evolution of species, biomedical research, and advances in biotechnology. Being able to work on these topics alongside experts reinforced their motivation and interest in science.

Seismic Waves and Natural Hazards

Geology also held a prominent place in this visit. Our students attended a talk on seismic waves and their importance in studying earthquakes and the Earth’s internal structure. Granada is an area with some seismic activity, so understanding this phenomenon from a scientific perspective is fundamental. The talk allowed them to connect theory with local reality, a key educational approach at our school in Granada.

Touring the Hallway of Zoological Knowledge

The day concluded with a tour of the well-known hallway of the Department of Zoology, a space filled with animal specimens that introduce students to the diversity of the animal kingdom. This visit sparked the students’ curiosity and invited them to observe, ask questions, and relate what they saw to the content covered in class.

Direct contact with scientific materials and research professionals helps students develop more critical and analytical thinking. At our bilingual school in Granada, we are committed to real experiences that complement classroom education and allow students to witness firsthand how scientific knowledge is generated. Learning from the Environment to Discover Vocations

The academic trip to Science Week has been an opportunity to reinforce learning, broaden interests, and confirm that studying science can open doors to multiple professional fields. At our bilingual institute in Granada, we firmly believe in an education that inspires, brings young people closer to the real world, and allows them to discover their passions.

Activities like this contribute to our students seeing themselves as future professionals capable of providing solutions to global challenges. Science is lived, researched, and shared, and our students were able to confirm this firsthand at the University of Granada.
